The Central Region Records Centre of the National Archives Department does not have permanent structures to store historical information.

This was revealed when Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Culture Moses Kunkuyu visited National Archives Records Centre in Lilongwe on Wednesday. The minister also visited Copyright Society of Malawi (Cosoma), the Censorship Board and Umodzi Park.

At the National Archives Records Centre, officials were shocked to find some important documents lying on the floor while others were sorted in different cartons.

“In normal circumstances, the documents are not supposed to be kept in this way. Even those in cartons are supposed to be in shelves. But as you can see, this is a rented structure hence, we are limited in terms of making alterations to fit the kind of work done here.

“We are in the sorting process of some of the files lying on the floor. When done we will put them in cartons and label them,” said archivist Evance Kadongola.

Director of Art and Culture, Dr. Elizabeth Gomani Chindebvu, said they have identified a place in Area 10 where they will construct a permanent structure.
